Dr. Marshall Milbrath

I am a poised and passionate critical pedagogue, researcher, and coach who believes that all people are entitled to the pursuit of happiness. I identify as a neo-generalist having worked with athletes, pre-service teachers, and pre-service health & fitness professionals over the past decade. Additionally, as a naturalist, I integrate my love of nature and the backcountry into scholarship and promote responsible use and enjoyment of natural spaces and resources.
I'm a trained curriculum & assessment expert, and I specialize in aligning educational programming with institutional values, mission, and national learning standards. During my 3-year tenure as a program director, I facilitated the creation of an undergraduate curriculum that created discrete paths of study in all areas of kinesiology; the only such curriculum in Illinois. When facilitating a classroom or training session, I strive to create an engaging classroom where students or clients are empowered to apply, analyze, and evaluate core concepts while challenging them to create new innovative solutions for real-world scenarios that are important to them.
As an activist, I advocate for the professionalization of coaching, and the commitment of higher education's provision of relevant, relatable, and rigorous opportunities that are directly tied to a meaningful return on investments, whether it be members of the classroom or the boardroom. When not actively engaged in teaching and learning, I research human endurance, psychosocial characteristics of exercise, and physical activity in backcountry activities - particularly long-distance back-packing.
I am an unapologetic idealist, and believe that no committed person or organization should settle for less than the realization of their mission and goals. I bring this view to all aspects of my work.
